COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Engineering (BSIDE) at San José State University is a 120-unit program designed to provide a flexible and multidisciplinary engineering education that combines foundational knowledge with customizable specialization. The curriculum includes 12 units of lower division general education, with several requirements fulfilled through major coursework, along with 6 units of American Institutions, while upper division general education and the writing requirement are fully integrated into the major. Physical education is waived. Students complete 31 units of major preparation, 59 units of major requirements, and a 12-unit academic breadth or minor, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests and career goals. Major preparation builds a strong foundation in science and mathematics through courses in biology, chemistry, calculus, physics, and either differential equations or discrete mathematics, along with a composition course to strengthen communication skills. The major requirements include core engineering courses such as programming, circuit analysis, introductory engineering, and mechanics, ensuring students gain essential technical competencies. Interdisciplinary coursework further expands knowledge across multiple domains, including renewable energy, intellectual property, engineering ethics, probability and statistics, mechatronics, and technology in society. Students also complete a two-part senior design project, which emphasizes practical, real-world problem solving and teamwork. A key component of the program is the technical focus, which includes a four-course engineering or STEM depth sequence and additional technical electives, both selected with advisor approval to align with individual career pathways. The academic breadth or minor requirement allows students to explore complementary disciplines such as business, computing, or other applied fields, enhancing interdisciplinary expertise. Overall, the program emphasizes flexibility, integration of diverse engineering concepts, and hands-on learning, preparing graduates for a wide range of careers in engineering and emerging technology fields.
