COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering at San Jose State University is a 120-unit program that integrates general education, foundational science and mathematics, and specialized engineering coursework to prepare students for optimizing complex systems and organizational performance. The degree includes 12 units of lower division general education, 6 units of American Institutions, 3 units of upper division general education, no physical education requirement, and a writing requirement fulfilled through ENGR 100W, along with 29 units of major preparation and 70 units of major requirements. The major preparation phase builds a strong technical foundation through courses in general chemistry, calculus I–III, differential equations and linear algebra, physics, and advanced writing, ensuring students develop analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills essential for engineering.The major requirements include core engineering courses such as introduction to engineering, design and graphics, materials science, and programming, followed by specialized industrial and systems engineering courses. These cover key areas such as engineering economics, systems engineering, lean manufacturing, work methods and measurement, probability and statistics, statistical process control, design of experiments, operations planning, service systems, supply chain engineering, simulation, operations research, and decision analytics. Students also complete hands-on learning experiences through analytics workshops and a two-part senior design capstone project, which focuses on solving real-world engineering problems. In addition, technical electives allow students to explore specific areas of interest within engineering.The program emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring students are well-prepared to analyze, design, and improve systems across industries such as manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and technology. Overall, the curriculum develops strong technical, analytical, and managerial skills, preparing graduates for professional engineering careers or advanced study in related fields.
