COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science at San Jose State University is a 120-unit program designed to prepare students for careers in forensic laboratories and investigative fields by combining general education, science foundations, and specialized forensic training. The degree includes 15 units of core lower division general education, with many requirements overlapping with major courses, along with 6 units of American Institutions coursework, 3 units of upper division general education, 2 units of physical education, and a writing requirement that can be fulfilled through FS 100W or JS 100W. Students also complete 44 units of major preparation, 36 units of major requirements, and 14 units of university electives. The major preparation phase builds strong foundations in biology, programming, data structures, computer systems, calculus, discrete mathematics, physics, ethics, human rights, and justice studies, along with a choice of statistics and programming courses to strengthen analytical and computational skills. The major requirements include core forensic courses such as FS 11, FS 161, and FS 162, a writing workshop, and a practical experience component that may involve internships, directed studies, or research-based activities, followed by a senior seminar on contemporary forensic issues. Students also complete 18 units of concentration courses focused on digital evidence and computing applications in forensic science, including data structures and algorithms, computer architecture, digital forensic analysis, and expert witness testimony. Overall, the program integrates science, technology, law, and ethics to provide a comprehensive education that prepares students for professional roles in forensic science and related disciplines.
