COURSE CURRICULUM

The Forensic Science BS with a concentration in Forensic Chemistry at San José State University is a 120-unit degree designed to prepare students for careers in forensic laboratories, chemical analysis, and criminal investigations. The program is structured into general education, major preparation, major requirements, and university electives. Students complete foundational GE requirements alongside 3 units of upper-division GE and 6 units of electives, while also meeting writing and physical education requirements. The major preparation phase (41 units) builds a strong scientific foundation through courses in biology, general chemistry, quantitative analysis, physics, calculus, statistics, ethics, human rights, and writing. This stage ensures students develop strong analytical, mathematical, and scientific reasoning skills necessary for advanced forensic study.The major requirements (47 units) include core forensic science courses, practical experience, a senior capstone, and specialized concentration coursework. Core courses introduce students to forensic science principles, crime scene investigation, and applied forensic methods, supported by scientific writing training. Students also complete practical requirements such as internships, independent studies, or participation in forensic publications, providing real-world experience in investigative environments. A senior seminar or capstone course allows students to engage with contemporary issues in forensic science and justice studies, strengthening critical thinking and professional readiness.The forensic chemistry concentration focuses heavily on advanced chemistry and laboratory-based training. Students study organic, inorganic, physical, and instrumental chemistry along with forensic-specific applications such as fire and explosion investigation and forensic chemistry analysis. Biochemistry coursework further strengthens understanding of molecular processes relevant to evidence analysis. Overall, the program combines rigorous chemistry education with forensic applications, preparing graduates for specialized roles in crime labs, forensic analysis, and scientific investigation within legal and law enforcement systems.
