COURSE CURRICULUM

The Forensic Science BS program at San José State University requires a total of 120 units and is designed to prepare students for careers in forensic laboratories and crime scene investigation. The curriculum is divided into general education, major preparation, major requirements, and university electives. Students complete 15 units of core lower-division general education, with some GE requirements embedded in major coursework, along with 3 units of upper-division GE and 6 units of university electives. The major preparation component is extensive (49 units) and builds a strong foundation in science and analytical reasoning through courses in biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, quantitative analysis, physics, calculus, statistics, forensic science-related ethics, human rights, and writing. This ensures students develop both scientific competency and critical thinking skills before advancing to specialized forensic coursework.The major requirements include 41 units and are structured into core courses, practical experience, a senior capstone, and concentration-specific science training. Core courses introduce students to forensic science principles, crime scene investigation, and applied forensic methods, along with required writing skills in scientific communication. Students must also complete practical experience through internships, individual studies, or participation in forensic publications, ensuring hands-on exposure to real-world forensic work. A senior capstone course further develops analytical and professional skills by addressing contemporary issues in forensic science and justice studies.The concentration courses deepen scientific specialization, particularly in biology, genetics, molecular biology, and forensic applications such as biological criminalistics and genotyping technologies. Students must also complete advanced biochemistry coursework to strengthen their understanding of biochemical processes relevant to forensic analysis. Overall, the program integrates rigorous natural science training with applied forensic methods, ethical foundations, and professional experience, preparing graduates for careers in crime laboratories, law enforcement agencies, and forensic research fields.
