COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science in Earth System Science (ESS) is a 120-unit interdisciplinary program that integrates geology, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and environmental science to provide a comprehensive understanding of Earth’s processes and systems. The curriculum is designed to help students study Earth as an interconnected system while also addressing sustainability and human impacts on the environment. Students begin with major preparation coursework in foundational sciences such as biology, general chemistry, physics, precalculus, and statistics, along with introductory geology and environmental earth science courses that build a strong scientific base. The major requirements include both lower-division and upper-division coursework focused on Earth processes and environmental systems. Lower-division geology courses introduce students to Earth materials, structures, disasters, and sustainability concepts, while upper-division courses develop deeper expertise in areas such as marine geology, geomorphology, hydrogeology, paleontology, and geographic information systems. A writing-in-the-discipline course (100W) and a capstone course in Earth System Science ensure students develop strong communication skills and the ability to integrate knowledge across disciplines.Students also complete a set of major electives that allow specialization in related STEM and environmental fields such as geochemistry, sedimentology, biodiversity, remote sensing, environmental policy, environmental law, and GIS-based analysis. These electives enable students to tailor their studies toward specific career interests such as environmental consulting, resource management, climate science, or geospatial analysis. In addition, university electives broaden interdisciplinary learning by incorporating social science, ethics, policy, and environmental planning perspectives.Overall, the ESS program prepares students to understand Earth as a dynamic, interconnected system and equips them with scientific, analytical, and technical skills needed to address environmental challenges. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in geoscience, environmental management, sustainability, and related fields, as well as for advanced study in Earth and environmental sciences.
