COURSE CURRICULUM

The Civil Engineering program provides students with a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology, and engineering principles, combined with specialized civil engineering coursework covering structural, geotechnical, transportation, construction, environmental, and water resources engineering. The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for professional roles in designing and managing infrastructure systems such as buildings, bridges, roads, water supply networks, and transportation systems, while also addressing modern challenges like environmental sustainability, urban development, and disaster resilience. Students complete lower-division preparation in calculus, differential equations, physics, chemistry, and engineering fundamentals before progressing into core civil engineering topics including statics, mechanics of materials, fluid mechanics, surveying, construction materials, engineering economics, and numerical methods. Advanced disciplinary courses focus on transportation engineering, construction management, geotechnical engineering, hydrology and hydraulics, structural analysis, and environmental engineering, along with applied areas such as earthquake-resistant design and engineering failure analysis. The program also emphasizes analytical and computational skills through courses in probabilistic modeling, civil engineering systems, and numerical problem-solving. A set of breadth courses and technical electives allows students to tailor their studies toward specific interests while gaining interdisciplinary exposure. Communication skills are strengthened through required writing-in-the-discipline coursework (ENGR 100W). Overall, the program is structured into major preparation and major requirements totaling 120 units, with additional general education requirements integrated into the degree. Graduates are well-prepared for entry into civil engineering careers or for further study at the graduate level, and the program is accredited by ABET, ensuring that it meets rigorous professional engineering education standards.
