COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemical Engineering BS program requires a total of 123 units and is designed to provide a strong foundation in chemistry, mathematics, physics, and engineering principles, followed by advanced chemical engineering coursework and technical specialization. The curriculum begins with major preparation courses (31 units) including general chemistry, calculus, physics, and English composition, which build the scientific and analytical base needed for engineering study. Students then progress into core and upper-division major requirements (68 units), which include both foundational engineering courses and advanced chemical engineering topics. Core courses introduce essential areas such as statics, materials science, organic chemistry, and engineering fundamentals, while major courses develop deeper expertise in mathematical methods, computational techniques, thermodynamics, process engineering, transport phenomena, kinetics, reactor design, unit operations, and process control. Students also complete laboratory courses and design projects that emphasize hands-on experimentation, data analysis, and real-world engineering applications. A key component of the program includes engineering communication through ENGR 100W and extensive laboratory training to strengthen technical reporting and research skills. The curriculum also incorporates technical electives (9 units), allowing students to specialize in areas such as biochemical engineering, environmental engineering, semiconductor and materials processing, or alternative energy and sustainability, depending on their interests and career goals. Additional coursework in chemistry, such as biochemistry or physical chemistry, ensures depth in supporting scientific disciplines. General education requirements complement technical studies by developing communication, critical thinking, and social awareness skills. The program is structured to meet ABET accreditation standards, ensuring high-quality engineering education aligned with professional expectations.
