COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Systems Physiology requires a total of 120 units and is structured to prepare students for careers in health professions such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacy, and related biomedical fields, as well as graduate study. The program emphasizes a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, followed by advanced study of human physiological systems and integrative biological functions.The major preparation phase (17 units) includes core foundational coursework such as Scientific Communication, Hypothesis Testing, Physics I and II, and Calculus I. These courses build essential analytical, mathematical, and scientific reasoning skills needed for advanced biological study.The major requirements (42 units) are divided into core courses and electives. Core courses (23 units) include Principles of Biology I and II, General Genetics, Systems Physiology and its laboratory, Cellular and Molecular Physiology, and Integrative Physiology. These courses focus on understanding how different organ systems function and interact within the human body.Students then complete 19 units of major electives, allowing them to specialize further in areas such as developmental biology, immunology, endocrine physiology, neurophysiology, toxicology, anatomy, and reproductive physiology. Laboratory and research-based options, including senior thesis, directed reading, independent study, and tutoring assignments, provide hands-on scientific training. Students may also select additional courses in molecular genetics, microbiology, or hematology with advisor approval.A required Chemistry minor (23 units) includes General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Safety, and Biochemistry, ensuring strong chemical foundations for physiological study. In addition, students complete science electives (3 units) and university electives (3 units) to broaden their academic experience.Overall, the program emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory experience in human physiology.
