COURSE CURRICULUM

The BS Biological Sciences (Microbiology concentration) requires 120 total units and combines strong foundations in biology, chemistry, and laboratory science with specialized microbiology training. The program includes general education, physical education, and writing requirements, with some fulfilled through major coursework. Major preparation (17 units) focuses on scientific communication, hypothesis testing, calculus, and physics, building analytical and quantitative skills. The major requirements (42 units) emphasize core microbiology topics such as general biology, immunology, general microbiology, microbial physiology, pathogenic microbiology, and bacterial genetics, ensuring a deep understanding of microorganisms and their applications. Students must also complete at least 7 units of laboratory electives, gaining hands-on experience in areas like immunology labs, microbial physiology labs, and research or thesis work, along with 9 units of additional electives that allow further specialization in genetics, virology, molecular biology, or advanced microbiology topics. A unique feature of this program is the required 23-unit chemistry minor, which includes general chemistry, organic chemistry with lab, biochemistry, and a chemical safety seminar, strengthening the student’s scientific background for research and industry roles. Additionally, students complete 3 units of science electives and 3 units of university electives. Overall, the curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with extensive laboratory training, preparing students for careers in microbiology, biotechnology, healthcare, and clinical laboratory science, as well as for graduate studies.
