COURSE CURRICULUM

The BS Marine Biology curriculum requires 120 total units and includes 27 units of major preparation and 58 units of major requirements, along with additional science and university electives. Major preparation builds a strong scientific foundation through courses such as scientific communication, general and organic chemistry with lab, calculus, physics, and statistical or ecological analysis. The core major requirements (31 units) cover essential biological and marine science topics including principles of biology, ecology, evolution, systematics, physiological ecology with lab, marine ecology, and oceanography. Students must also complete one biological diversity course focusing on marine organisms such as invertebrates, vertebrates, fish, birds, mammals, or marine plants. In addition, 23 units of major electives allow students to specialize in areas like genetics, conservation biology, marine ecology, oceanography, GIS, diving, or independent research, offering flexibility to match career interests. The program is further supported by 3 units of science electives from related STEM fields and 3 units of general university electives. Overall, the curriculum emphasizes a balance of theoretical knowledge, laboratory work, and field-based learning to prepare students for careers in marine science, research, and environmental management.
