COURSE CURRICULUM

The BS in Ecology and Evolution requires a total of 120 units and is structured to provide a strong scientific foundation along with specialized training in ecology, evolution, and biodiversity; students complete 18 units of lower-division GE (with significant overlap from major coursework), 6 units of upper-division GE, 2 units of physical education, and meet writing requirements through BIOL 100W, while American Institutions requirements are fulfilled through GE options. The major preparation (31–37 units) includes essential science courses such as general chemistry, physics, statistics, organic chemistry, and calculus, ensuring students develop strong analytical and quantitative skills. The major requirements (45–51 units) form the core of the program, including foundational biology courses, ecology, evolution, conservation biology, systematics, and plant communities, along with lab components and hands-on learning experiences. Students also complete biological diversity courses (such as plant taxonomy, insect diversity, or zoology) and select 7–13 units of major electives, allowing them to explore areas like genetics, marine ecology, biogeography, or field methods based on their interests. In addition, students take 3 units of science electives and 3 units of university electives, providing flexibility to broaden their knowledge or specialize further. Overall, the program combines rigorous coursework in biology and related sciences with practical, field-oriented learning to prepare students for careers or advanced study in ecology, conservation, and environmental sciences.
