COURSE CURRICULUM

The Aviation (BS) degree requires a total of 120 units and combines general education, technical aviation training, and specialized coursework to prepare students for diverse careers in the aviation industry; students complete 21 units of lower-division GE (with some overlap from major courses), fulfill American Institutions requirements through GE options, and meet writing requirements via ENGR 100W, while physical education is waived, making the structure more focused on professional training. The program includes 17 units of major preparation covering foundational subjects like financial accounting, business statistics, calculus, and a full physics sequence, ensuring strong analytical and scientific knowledge. The 27-unit core curriculum builds essential aviation expertise through courses in aviation management, safety and security, human factors, aviation law, airline operations, ethics, and a senior capstone, providing both technical understanding and managerial insight. A major component of the degree is the 49 units dedicated to one of four specialization options—Flight Operations, Professional Flight, Aviation Management, or Maintenance Management—allowing students to tailor their education to specific career paths such as pilot training, airport and airline operations, business and management roles, or aircraft maintenance systems; for example, the Professional Flight option includes FAA pilot training and certifications, while Aviation Management integrates business and economics courses, and Maintenance Management requires FAA-approved technical training. Overall, the program offers a balanced mix of theory, practical skills, and industry-focused training, equipping graduates with the knowledge and credentials needed for careers in aviation or related fields.
