COURSE CURRICULUM

The Discrete Mathematics concentration is a 120-unit undergraduate program that blends mathematics, computer science, and general education to prepare students for careers in technology and advanced study. The program includes 25 units of lower division general education, with some overlap through major coursework, and 6 units of upper division GE. Students also complete 2 units of physical education, while the writing requirement is typically fulfilled through an approved 100W course such as engineering, computer science, or physics writing.The program begins with 17 units of major preparation focused on computer science fundamentals. Students learn programming, data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design, building a strong computational foundation that complements their mathematical studies. The major core requirements, totaling 49 units, start with lower division courses in calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics, forming the essential mathematical base.At the upper division level, students explore advanced topics such as abstract mathematics, combinatorics, graph theory, numerical analysis, and probability. These subjects are central to discrete mathematics and are widely applied in computer science, cryptography, data science, and algorithm design. Students also choose additional courses from a broad list, including areas like optimization, databases, parallel processing, computer graphics, and advanced statistics, allowing them to tailor the program to their interests and career goals.In addition, students complete 15 units of university electives, which provide flexibility to pursue other academic interests or deepen knowledge in related fields. Overall, the program is rigorous and interdisciplinary, combining theoretical mathematics with practical computing skills.
