COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computational Science concentration in the mathematics program is a 120-unit degree that combines general education, mathematical foundations, computational training, and elective flexibility. Students complete 21 units of lower division general education, with some overlap through major coursework in science and mathematics, along with 6 units of upper division GE. The program also includes 2 units of physical education, while the writing requirement is typically satisfied through an approved 100W course such as engineering, computer science, or physics writing.The program begins with 17 units of major preparation, where students develop essential skills in programming and physics. Courses such as Python programming for data analysis and general physics establish a strong base in computational thinking and scientific principles. These are followed by 49 units of major requirements, which form the core of the degree. At the lower division level, students study calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics, building a solid mathematical foundation.At the upper division level, the curriculum becomes more advanced and specialized, covering topics such as advanced calculus, partial differential equations, complex variables, numerical analysis, probability, and mathematical modeling. These courses emphasize the application of mathematics to real-world problems, including scientific computing and data analysis. Students also choose additional electives from a wide range of topics such as cryptography, optimization, data science, combinatorics, and computational physics, allowing them to tailor the program to their interests and career goals.In addition, students complete 19 units of university electives, which can be used to explore other disciplines or strengthen expertise in related areas. Overall, the program is rigorous and interdisciplinary, equipping students with strong analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills needed for careers in research, technology, and scientific industries, as well as for graduate study.
