COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies at San José State University is a performance-centered degree designed to prepare students for professional careers in jazz performance, composition, arranging, and music education. The program builds a strong foundation in both classical and jazz traditions through coursework in music theory, musicianship, music history, and jazz-specific studies such as jazz theory, improvisation, keyboard skills, and arranging. Students progress through structured training that includes lower- and upper-division core courses, culminating in advanced study in jazz improvisation, jazz arranging, and a senior project.A major emphasis of the program is applied performance.
