COURSE CURRICULUM

The BFA in Graphic Design at San Jose State University is a 120-unit program that blends general education, foundational art and design courses, and advanced professional training to prepare students for careers in graphic design. The degree includes 25 units of lower division general education, 6 units of American Institutions, 9 units of upper division general education, a 2-unit physical education requirement, and a 3-unit writing requirement, along with 3 units of lower division and 2–4 units of upper division Humanities and the Arts college requirements. Students also complete 21 units of major preparation, 48 units of major requirements, and 1 unit of university electivesMajor preparation focuses on building fundamental artistic and design skills through courses in illustration, art history, design in society, graphic visualization, digital applications, and design history and theory. These courses provide a strong foundation in visual communication, creativity, and technical design tools. The major requirements then develop advanced competencies in typography, visual communication processes, graphic design at multiple levels, portfolio development, image-making, exhibition design, and senior studio work.Students also gain hands-on experience through a required practicum or internship, which helps bridge academic learning with real-world professional practice. Additional elective courses allow students to specialize in areas such as motion graphics, user interface and interaction design, experience design, and 3D branding. The program emphasizes both conceptual thinking and technical execution, ensuring students develop a strong design portfolio and professional skills.
