COURSE CURRICULUM

The BFA Art with a concentration in Spatial Art is a 120-unit undergraduate program that combines general education, foundational art training, and specialized study in three-dimensional art forms. The degree includes core lower division and upper division general education requirements, American Institutions courses, and a small physical education component, along with writing requirements fulfilled through ART 100W. Students begin with 24 units of major preparation, where they build essential artistic skills through courses in two-dimensional and three-dimensional design, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, digital media, photography, and art history, ensuring a strong creative and technical foundation. The major requirements, totaling 52 units, focus on both conceptual and practical development. Core courses introduce professional practices, contemporary art perspectives, and critical thinking, while upper-division art history courses provide cultural and historical context, enhancing analytical abilities. The program then moves into specialized courses that emphasize spatial and sculptural practices, including installation art and advanced work in materials such as metal, glass, wood, and ceramics. Students have flexibility to explore different media through a range of electives, allowing them to refine their individual artistic direction and technical expertise. Additional advanced studio courses further deepen skills in areas like fabrication, mold-making, and large-scale sculpture. The program culminates in a capstone experience consisting of a seminar and a final BFA project, where students create and present a professional-quality body of work, often in the form of an exhibition.
