COURSE CURRICULUM

The Digital Media Art (DMA) BFA program is a 120-unit undergraduate degree that integrates general education, foundational art training, and specialized digital media coursework. Students complete 25 units of lower division general education, with some overlap through major courses, and 6 units of upper division GE, partially satisfied within the major. The program also includes 2 units of physical education and a writing requirement fulfilled through ART 100W. Additional Humanities and Arts college requirements at both lower and upper division levels ensure a broad academic background.The major preparation consists of 24 units and builds a strong artistic foundation. Students begin with 2D design fundamentals and continue with courses in 3D design, drawing, sculpture, digital media, video art, and photography. They also study art history, gaining an understanding of artistic development across time and cultures. These courses provide essential creative and technical skills needed for advanced study.The major requirements total 52 units and include core courses that focus on professional development, contemporary art practices, and writing in the arts. Students also complete upper division art history courses to deepen their theoretical knowledge. A significant portion of the program is dedicated to specialized digital media art studios, where students learn skills such as 3D modeling, digital video production, interdisciplinary design, and system-based art. Additional electives allow students to explore areas like game studies, web development, human-computer interaction, and advanced digital projects.Students also choose studio electives in areas such as ceramics, sculpture, or photography, adding diversity to their artistic practice. The program concludes with a 6-unit capstone experience, including a seminar and a group exhibition, where students present their final work. Overall, the program combines creativity, technology, and critical thinking to prepare students for careers in digital media and interactive design.
