COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Physics at San José State University is a 120-unit degree program designed to provide students with a strong foundation in both theoretical and applied physics, along with sufficient flexibility for interdisciplinary study through university electives. The program includes 18 units of Core Lower Division General Education, with up to 10 units potentially satisfied through major coursework in areas such as natural sciences, mathematics, and analytical reasoning, as well as 6 units of American Institutions requirements. Students also complete 9 units of Upper Division General Education, 2 units of Physical Education, and a 3-unit Written Communication requirement (GWAR/WID).Major preparation consists of 33 units and builds essential mathematical and scientific foundations through coursework in general chemistry (CHEM 1A), calculus (MATH 30, 31, and 32), differential equations (MATH 33A), linear algebra (MATH 39), and introductory physics series courses covering mechanics, electromagnetism, and waves, light, and heat (PHYS 50, 51, and 52).The major requirements total 37 units and provide advanced training in core physics concepts and laboratory/computational skills. Students begin with an introduction to physics and astronomy (PHYS 20) and computational physics (PHYS 40), then progress into upper-division coursework including advanced mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, statistical physics, modern physics, and mathematical methods in physics. Additional required upper-division physics units ensure deeper specialization and mastery of key concepts in the discipline.The program also includes 12 units of university electives, allowing students to pursue a second area of study or interdisciplinary interests such as mathematics, computer science, engineering, or education. This flexibility supports a broader academic experience while maintaining a strong physics core.
