COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics, BA Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) is a structured pathway designed for students who want to become mathematics teachers at the middle school or high school level while earning a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics along with teaching credential preparation. The program integrates mathematics content, pedagogy, and field experience into a single coordinated curriculum that leads toward a Single Subject Credential in Mathematics and additional education specialist preparation. Students complete a total of 120 units, including general education, major preparation, major coursework, credential requirements, and university electives. The program emphasizes strong mathematical foundations combined with professional training in teaching methods and inclusive education practices. Major preparation includes foundational courses in calculus, physics, programming, and introductory social and cultural studies, ensuring students develop both quantitative and contextual understanding. Programming options may include Python, C, Java, R, or scientific computing courses that support analytical and computational skills. The core mathematics curriculum includes calculus, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, abstract mathematics, and secondary school mathematics topics, along with advanced courses in analysis, algebra, probability, and statistics. The credential component is a key feature of the program and includes coursework focused on teaching students with diverse learning needs, classroom management, assessment strategies, and inclusive education practices, as well as multiple stages of student teaching. These field experiences allow students to apply instructional strategies in real classroom environments under supervision. The program also includes methods courses specifically focused on teaching secondary mathematics effectively. Students must meet GPA and subject matter competency requirements and complete at least 80 percent of mathematics coursework before entering solo teaching experiences.
