COURSE CURRICULUM

The Liberal Studies Integrated Teacher Education Program at San José State University is a 135-unit degree that integrates academic coursework with teacher credential preparation for students pursuing a career in elementary education. The program is structured to fulfill both a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and requirements for a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, along with eligibility for a bilingual authorization in some pathways. Students complete a small portion of lower division general education (9 units) because most GE requirements are embedded within the major, along with 2 units of physical education and a writing-in-the-disciplines requirement fulfilled through HUM 100W. The program includes 88 units of major coursework covering a broad range of subjects aligned with K–8 education standards, including literacy, language development, mathematics, science, social studies, history, and visual and performing arts. Within literacy and language studies, students take courses in children’s literature, English composition, and language development for diverse learners. Social science and history requirements include coursework in U.S. history, world history, and education equity, while mathematics and science courses build foundational content knowledge for teaching elementary-level curriculum. Students also complete arts education, child development, and health-related coursework to support holistic child learning. Field study components provide hands-on classroom experience through structured placements. In addition to the major coursework, students complete 36 units of credential courses, which include educational psychology, classroom methods in science, mathematics, and social studies, as well as extensive student teaching experiences in K–8 classrooms. The program emphasizes equity, diversity, and inclusive teaching practices throughout all coursework and field experiences. Upon completion, graduates are fully prepared to enter the teaching profession with both subject matter expertise and practical classroom experience required for certification.
