COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor’s degree in World Languages and Literatures (with a focus on Japanese) is a 120-unit program designed to build advanced language proficiency, cultural understanding, and global communication skills. The curriculum includes 25 units of lower division general education, 6 units of upper division general education, 2 units of physical education, and a writing requirement (GWAR/WID), typically fulfilled through FORL 100W. Students must also complete 6 units of American Institutions requirements, along with 3 units of lower division and 2–4 units of upper division Humanities and Arts college requirements. In addition, 8–11 units of university electives allow flexibility for students to explore other interests or complement their major.The program begins with 20 units of major preparation, where students develop intermediate-level proficiency in Japanese through courses such as JPN 25A and JPN 25B. A unique feature of this program is the requirement to study a second world language (12 units), which broadens linguistic ability and enhances cross-cultural competence. This dual-language approach prepares students to engage in multilingual and multicultural environments.The major requirements, totaling 45–46 units, focus on advanced language mastery and cultural studies. Core courses include advanced Japanese language classes, conversational skills, business Japanese, media Japanese, and courses on Japanese culture, minority cultures, and literature. Students also complete a writing workshop to strengthen academic and professional communication. Electives allow further specialization in areas such as linguistics, calligraphy, film, narratives, and JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) preparation.Overall, the program provides a comprehensive education that combines language fluency with cultural and literary knowledge. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in international business, translation, education, diplomacy, and global communication, with strong skills in both Japanese and an additional world language.
