COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies at San José State University is a 120-unit program designed to provide maximum flexibility for students to create a personalized academic pathway aligned with their unique educational and career goals. The curriculum includes 34 units of lower division general education, 6 units of American Institutions, and 9 units of upper division general education that are satisfied through major coursework, along with a 2-unit physical education requirement and a 3-unit writing requirement fulfilled by HUM 100W. Students complete 39 units of major requirements and 39 units of university electives, allowing significant freedom to explore diverse academic interests. The major requirements consist of 21 units of core coursework, including classes in critical humanities, digital literacies, and interdisciplinary writing, which build strong analytical, communication, and critical thinking skills. Students also select one methods-based course such as ethnographic methods or design thinking to develop research or problem-solving abilities. An important component of the program is the SJSU Studies requirement, where students complete courses across three upper division areas focused on environmental sustainability, social issues and diversity in the United States, and global cultures, ensuring a broad and integrative educational experience. Additionally, students design an 18-unit area of specialization in consultation with an advisor and the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education, enabling them to combine courses from multiple disciplines that support their specific interests and objectives. The large number of elective units further enhances customization, and in some cases, students may apply credit for prior learning. Overall, the program emphasizes interdisciplinary thinking, adaptability, and self-directed learning, preparing graduates to integrate knowledge across fields and pursue diverse professional or academic opportunities.
