COURSE CURRICULUM

The Global Studies program at San Jose State University is a 120-unit interdisciplinary degree that combines general education, foundational coursework, and specialized global studies training to prepare students for careers addressing complex global issues. The program includes 25 units of lower division general education, 6 units of American Institutions, 3 units of upper division general education, a 2-unit physical education requirement, and a 3-unit writing requirement, along with 6 units of major preparation, 56–64 units of major requirements, and 11–19 units of electives. Major preparation introduces students to global studies through foundational courses, while the major requirements include core courses such as advanced and capstone seminars, along with an international or experiential learning component. Students then complete a broad set of interdisciplinary courses across four key areas: global sustainability, global development and human rights, global security and technology, and global cultures and society. These areas draw from multiple disciplines such as anthropology, economics, political science, geography, sociology, and environmental studies, allowing students to explore global issues from diverse perspectives. The program also requires students to complete a minor in a related field and upper division electives to deepen their specialization. Overall, the curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, global awareness, and analytical and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in government, international organizations, NGOs, business, and further academic study.
