COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies (Planning, Policy, and Environmental Studies track) is designed to prepare students for careers in environmental management, sustainability, and environmental policy. The program combines scientific foundations with social, legal, and policy perspectives to help students understand and address complex environmental challenges. Students begin with major preparation courses in chemistry, environmental science, mathematics, and statistics to build analytical and scientific skills. The core major curriculum includes studies in environmental issues, research and writing, environmental economics and policy, resource analysis, human ecology, environmental law, environmental impact assessment, and a senior seminar, providing a comprehensive understanding of environmental systems and decision-making processes. Students then deepen their knowledge through major electives and field-based courses such as wetland studies, sustainable agriculture, forest ecology, environmental restoration, coastal field studies, and water resource management, allowing hands-on learning in real-world environmental settings. Upper-division general education courses further broaden students’ perspectives by integrating environmental thought, global issues, and interdisciplinary analysis. In addition, students complete advisor-approved electives and a minor to develop specialized expertise in related fields. The program also encourages practical experience through internships in environmental organizations, helping students apply classroom learning in professional contexts. Overall, the degree emphasizes critical thinking, environmental problem-solving, policy analysis, and field-based learning, preparing graduates for careers in environmental planning, conservation, sustainability consulting, regulatory agencies, and resource management, as well as for further study in graduate or professional programs.
