COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Studies, Preparation for Teaching BA requires a total of 120 units and is designed to prepare students for a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential (K–8) while also building a strong foundation in environmental studies. Only 6 units of lower-division general education remain outside the major, as most GE requirements are integrated into the program. The major includes 112 units of coursework, beginning with core environmental studies classes such as Introduction to Environmental Issues, Environmental Research and Writing, Energy and the Environment, Water Policy, Environmental Thought, Environmental Education, Sustainable Agriculture, and Race, Class and the Environment. A large portion of the degree is dedicated to Multiple Subjects Preparation Core Curriculum (74–77 units), which develops future teachers in reading, language, literature, mathematics, science, history-social science, and visual and performing arts. Students complete English and literacy-focused courses such as composition, critical thinking, children’s literature, and modern English, along with structured sequences in language development and reading instruction. The history and social science component includes California, U.S., and world history for teachers, along with required coursework in ethnic studies or U.S. history and government. Mathematics preparation covers number systems, probability and statistics, and geometry, while science requirements include chemistry, earth systems, physics, and environmental science education. Students also complete arts education courses in music, art, dance, and storytelling to support classroom teaching skills. Additional coursework in child development, health, and physical education ensures a well-rounded understanding of student growth and classroom management. Advisor-approved electives and optional internships provide further practical experience. Overall, the program prepares graduates for elementary and middle school teaching careers with strong interdisciplinary knowledge in both education and environmental studies.
