COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in English with a Preparation for Teaching concentration at San José State University is designed to provide students with both a strong foundation in English studies and the subject-matter preparation required for pursuing a single-subject teaching credential in English in California. The program combines lower-division general education requirements, including writing, critical thinking, and introductory composition courses, with upper-division coursework in literature, cultural studies, and advanced writing. Students study major literary periods through courses such as early Atlantic literature, modern and contemporary literature, and global and comparative literary traditions, while also engaging with specialized areas like Shakespeare and American literature with attention to ethnicity and cultural diversity.
