COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Arts Program is a 120-unit interdisciplinary degree offered by the Department of Humanities that emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, and artistic exploration across multiple disciplines. The program is designed to allow students to build a personalized academic pathway by combining coursework from visual arts, music, theatre, dance, film, literature, and other humanities fields. Its goal is to help students understand creativity as both a process and a skill that can be applied across artistic, academic, and professional contexts.The degree structure includes general education requirements, a small amount of major preparation, and 45 units of major coursework. Students begin with foundational courses such as Creativity Matters and Introduction to Digital Humanities, along with theory and history courses in the arts. They also complete studio or activity-based coursework in areas such as drawing, design, acting, creative writing, or dance, helping them develop hands-on artistic skills. In addition, students take arts history and theory courses that build cultural and analytical understanding of different artistic traditions and media.At the upper-division level, students explore advanced interdisciplinary topics such as creative leadership, contemporary world arts, and the creative process. A senior seminar serves as a capstone experience, integrating learning from across the program. Students also select upper-division electives from various arts disciplines, allowing further specialization or exploration of new creative areas. Internship, individual study, or community-based arts work may also be included to provide real-world experience.Overall, the Creative Arts Program fosters flexible, interdisciplinary learning that prepares students for a wide range of careers. Graduates often pursue roles in the arts, media, education, writing, design, entertainment, and creative industries, while also developing transferable skills in innovation, communication, and problem-solving that are valuable in many other professional fields.
