COURSE CURRICULUM
The Department of World Languages and Literatures with a focus on Chinese offers a structured 120-unit undergraduate program designed to build strong proficiency in Mandarin Chinese while also developing a deep understanding of Chinese culture, literature, history, and society. The program emphasizes progressive language development through intermediate and advanced coursework, including CHIN 25A and CHIN 25B at the lower-division level, followed by advanced language training in CHIN 101A and CHIN 101B. Students also complete coursework in Chinese culture, language structure, and specialized topics, alongside reading and analysis of Chinese cultural texts and historical materials. A key feature of the program is its focus on both linguistic mastery and cultural literacy, requiring students to engage with China’s literary, political, and historical traditions through courses such as Chinese Culture and Politics Through Literature and History of China. In addition to Chinese studies, students are required to complete a second world language, further strengthening their global communication skills and intercultural competence. The curriculum also includes writing proficiency requirements through FORL 100W and ensures exposure to broader humanities perspectives through college-wide requirements in the arts and humanities. Students are encouraged to take interdisciplinary electives that connect Chinese studies with fields such as history, religion, and global studies. Overall, the program is designed to prepare graduates for careers and further study in areas such as international relations, translation, education, global business, and cultural exchange. By combining language fluency with cultural and historical insight, the degree equips students with the ability to communicate effectively across cultures and to engage thoughtfully with the complexities of the Chinese-speaking world in both academic and professional contexts.
