COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Art with a concentration in Studio Practice is a 120-unit undergraduate program that offers a flexible and customizable path for students interested in developing their artistic skills while benefiting from a broad liberal arts education. The degree includes general education requirements such as lower and upper division GE, American Institutions courses, physical education, and a writing requirement fulfilled through ART 100W. Students begin with 21 units of major preparation, where they build foundational skills in two-dimensional and three-dimensional design, drawing, sculpture, digital media, photography, and art history, ensuring a well-rounded introduction to multiple artistic disciplines. The major requirements, totaling 31 units, focus on both creative development and theoretical understanding. Core courses introduce professional practices, contemporary art concepts, and critical thinking, while upper-division art history courses provide cultural and global context. A key component of the program is the area of focus, where students select a specialization such as digital media art, spatial art, pictorial art, photography, gallery and museum studies, or art history. This allows students to either concentrate deeply in one medium or explore multiple areas based on their interests. The program culminates in a capstone project, where students produce a senior-level work demonstrating their skills and creative vision. Additionally, students complete 22–24 units of electives or a minor, giving them the flexibility to expand into other fields or enhance their career prospects. Overall, the degree emphasizes creativity, adaptability, and independent thinking, preparing students for diverse careers in art, design, media, and related industries.
