COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in Studio Practice/Preparation for Teaching is a 120-unit undergraduate program that combines general education, foundational art training, and specialized coursework aimed at preparing students for careers in art education. The degree includes lower and upper division general education requirements, American Institutions courses, physical education, and a writing requirement fulfilled through ART 100W. Students begin with 27 units of major preparation, where they develop essential artistic and theoretical knowledge through courses in design, drawing, sculpture, digital media, photography, and art history, along with studies in aesthetics and specialized art history topics. The major requirements, totaling 34 units, focus on both artistic development and teaching preparation. Core courses include art fundamentals such as painting, contemporary art practices, and professional preparation, along with teaching-focused courses that cover instructional methods and diversity in art education. Students also complete an upper-division art history course to deepen their cultural and global understanding of art. A key feature of the program is the area of focus, where students choose a specialization such as ceramics, digital media, drawing and painting, photography, printmaking, craft, or sculpture, allowing them to build expertise in a preferred medium. The program culminates in a capstone field experience course, where students gain practical exposure to teaching art in real-world settings. Additionally, students complete 13–15 units of electives or a minor to broaden their academic experience. Overall, the degree provides a balanced combination of creative skills, theoretical knowledge, and teaching preparation, making it an ideal pathway for students planning to pursue a teaching credential and become art educators.
