COURSE CURRICULUM

The Anthropology degree is a 120-unit undergraduate program that combines general education, core disciplinary study, and a large number of electives to provide both depth and flexibility. Students complete 16 units of lower division general education, with many requirements fulfilled through major courses, and 9 units of upper division GE. The program also includes 2 units of physical education and a 3-unit writing requirement. Additionally, American Institutions requirements can be satisfied through selected general education courses.The major begins with a 3-unit preparation requirement, where students choose a course in statistics or geography to build foundational analytical or global knowledge. The main component of the degree is the 42-unit major requirement, which starts with core courses in cultural anthropology, human evolution, archaeology, and anthropological theory, along with a senior-level course exploring current issues in the field. Students also complete a research methods course, gaining hands-on experience in ethnography, archaeology, or biological analysis.Beyond the core, students take specialized courses across the three major subfields of anthropology. In cultural anthropology, they study topics such as food, health, urban life, religion, and social organization. Archaeology courses focus on ancient civilizations, environmental interactions, and excavation techniques. Biological anthropology explores human evolution, primates, disease, and forensic science. These areas allow students to develop a well-rounded understanding of humanity from multiple perspectives.Students also complete 6 units of anthropology electives, which may include independent studies, research projects, or practical experiences. A significant portion of the program, 39 units, is reserved for university electives, giving students the freedom to pursue a minor, double major, or additional areas of interest. Overall, the program is flexible and interdisciplinary, equipping students with valuable analytical and research skills.
