ABOUT UNIVERSITY

San José State University (SJSU) is a public research university located in San Jose and is part of the California State University system. Founded in 1857 as a normal school for teacher training, it is the oldest public university in the western United States and has evolved into a large, diverse institution offering over 250 degree programs across nine academic colleges. The university enrolls around 37,000 students annually, with a strong presence of graduate, international, and Asian students, and is recognized as both a Hispanic-Serving Institution and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution.The campus, situated in downtown San Jose, spans about 154 acres and has undergone significant historical developments. After originally operating in San Francisco, the institution relocated permanently to San Jose in 1871. Over time, it experienced multiple name changes, reflecting its growth from a teachers’ college to a comprehensive university, officially becoming San José State University in 1974. Throughout the 20th century, SJSU played important roles in social and educational advancements, including early police science education, student activism during the Vietnam War, and preservation of historic campus landmarks like Tower Hall.In modern times, SJSU has expanded its research capabilities and infrastructure, earning classification for high research activity. Notable collaborations, such as projects with NASA Ames Research Center, highlight its contributions to innovation in science and technology. The university also partnered with the city to create the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, a unique joint city-university facility.Athletically, SJSU competes in NCAA Division I as the Spartans and has achieved national success, with numerous championships and Olympic medalists.
