COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Science, Technology, and Public Policy at RIT is a 30-credit interdisciplinary program designed to prepare students for careers at the intersection of science, engineering, and policy-making by combining technical understanding with policy analysis and decision-making skills. In the first year, students begin with core courses in Readings in Public Policy, Graduate Policy Analysis, and Evaluation and Research Design, which provide a strong foundation in how policies are developed, assessed, and informed by data and research methods, along with one graduate elective to support specialization. In the spring semester, students continue with Graduate Decision Analysis, which focuses on structured decision-making in complex policy environments, along with additional electives and either Technological Innovation and Public Policy or a Graduate Science and Technology Policy Seminar, both of which explore how emerging technologies influence regulatory and societal frameworks. In the second year, students complete a culminating experience through either a Capstone Experience, Public Policy Thesis, or Comprehensive Exam pathway, depending on their chosen track, allowing them to apply analytical and research skills to real-world policy challenges or conduct in-depth academic research. Additional electives may be required depending on the chosen option. Overall, the program emphasizes the integration of science, technology, and governance, preparing graduates for roles in government agencies, research institutions, nonprofit organizations, and industry, where they can contribute to evidence-based policymaking in rapidly evolving technological fields.
