COURSE CURRICULUM
The MS in Microelectronic Engineering at RIT is a 30-credit graduate program focused on semiconductor device fabrication, process integration, and advanced micro- and nano-scale manufacturing. The curriculum is structured to build both a strong theoretical foundation and hands-on expertise in semiconductor processing and device physics.In the first year, students begin with core courses that focus on the fundamentals of microfabrication and materials used in semiconductor manufacturing. Courses such as Microelectronic Fabrication, Thin Films, and Lithography Materials and Processes introduce key cleanroom processes and techniques used to build integrated circuits and microelectronic devices. A Graduate Seminar supports professional development and exposure to current research topics in the field.In the spring semester, students move into Semiconductor Process Integration, where they learn how individual fabrication steps are combined into complete device manufacturing flows. Microelectronics Manufacturing further develops practical understanding of production-scale semiconductor processes. Students also take a graduate elective to begin tailoring the degree toward a specialized area of interest.In the second year, the curriculum shifts toward advanced modeling and research. Physical Modeling of Semiconductor Devices focuses on understanding electrical and physical behavior of semiconductor components, forming the theoretical basis for device design and optimization. Additional graduate electives allow further specialization in areas such as nanoelectronics, fabrication technology, or device design.Students then complete a culminating experience in either a thesis or a graduate research project. The thesis option involves independent research contributing new knowledge to the field, while the project option emphasizes applied problem-solving in microelectronic engineering. This final stage prepares graduates for careers in semiconductor manufacturing, device engineering, and advanced electronics research and development.
