COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Manufacturing and Mechanical Systems Integration (MMSI) at Rochester Institute of Technology is a multidisciplinary graduate program designed to prepare students for advanced roles in manufacturing, systems integration, and industrial engineering. The program focuses on combining mechanical engineering, manufacturing processes, systems thinking, and management principles to develop professionals capable of improving and optimizing complex production and engineering systems. The curriculum begins with foundational coursework in mechatronics and systems fundamentals, along with statistical and quality tools used in modern manufacturing environments. In the first fall semester, students take MMSI Graduate Seminar, Mechatronics and Mechanical Systems Fundamentals, Design of Experiments, and an option course that allows early specialization. This establishes a strong base in systems integration and data-driven engineering decision-making.In the spring semester, students expand their expertise by studying Accounting for Decision Makers, which introduces financial and managerial concepts relevant to engineering leadership. They also take a Six Sigma or Lean Six Sigma course, focusing on process improvement and quality control methodologies widely used in manufacturing industries. Additional option courses and a culminating track choice—such as thesis planning, a capstone project, or a comprehensive exam—allow students to tailor their academic path.In the second year, students continue with advanced electives and project-based learning. The fall semester includes a project management course along with additional MMSI option courses and electives that deepen technical or managerial expertise. The program then concludes with a culminating experience, where students choose between a thesis, capstone project, or comprehensive exam option, depending on their professional goals.Overall, the program is designed to produce graduates who can bridge engineering and management, with strong capabilities in manufacturing optimization, systems integration, quality engineering, and project leadership. Graduates are prepared for roles in manufacturing engineering, systems engineering, operations management, and industrial consulting across a wide range of industries.
