COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Environmental Science at Rochester Institute of Technology is a 30-credit graduate program designed to develop advanced expertise in environmental systems, sustainability, and scientific research. The curriculum is structured over two years and combines core scientific training with flexible electives and either a research-focused or professional practice pathway. In the first year, students begin with Environmental Science Graduate Studies I and II, which introduce key concepts, research methods, and foundational approaches to environmental problem-solving. Students also take graduate-level courses in statistics, public policy or science and technology studies (STS), and a science core elective to build a strong interdisciplinary foundation.During the spring semester of the first year, students expand their technical expertise through a graduate GIS elective and additional professional or science electives, allowing them to explore specialized areas such as ecology, chemistry, or environmental systems. Students then choose between a professional pathway or a research pathway, depending on their career goals. Those on the research track begin Environmental Science Graduate Research, while others continue with applied professional electives. In the second year, students focus on either a thesis or a professional project. Research-focused students complete a thesis through ENVS-790, while professional-track students complete a project through ENVS-780, applying their knowledge to real-world environmental challenges.Overall, the program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, combining science, policy, and technical skills to prepare graduates for careers in environmental consulting, research institutions, government agencies, and sustainability organizations. It equips students with the ability to analyze complex environmental issues and develop practical, evidence-based solutions to global environmental challenges.
