COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Deaf Education at Rochester Institute of Technology follows a comprehensive 62-credit curriculum designed to prepare educators for teaching deaf and hard-of-hearing students at the secondary level. The program is typically completed over two years and begins with a strong foundation in the first year. In the fall semester, students study the history of deaf education, psychology and human development, educational and cultural diversity, and general instructional methods. These courses provide essential knowledge about learners, teaching practices, and the cultural context of deaf education.In the spring semester of the first year, the curriculum becomes more applied, including courses in special education, assessment practices, and the structure of American Sign Language and English. Students also complete their first practicum, gaining hands-on classroom experience. The summer term focuses on specialized skills such as teaching learners with additional needs, language acquisition, and the use of sign language in instructional delivery, further strengthening communication and teaching competencies.During the second year, students advance their knowledge through courses in curriculum design, mainstream education issues, educational audiology, and literacy development for deaf adolescents. The program culminates in an intensive spring semester that includes two student teaching placements, allowing students to apply their learning in real classroom settings under supervision. Additionally, students complete a professional portfolio and may take an inquiry-based elective focused on teaching practice.Overall, the curriculum integrates theory, language development, instructional strategies, and extensive field experience.
