COURSE CURRICULUM

The MFA in Photography and Related Media at RIT is a 60-credit graduate program structured to develop advanced artistic, conceptual, and professional skills in contemporary photography and related media practices. The curriculum integrates studio work, historical and theoretical study, research, and professional development, culminating in a thesis exhibition.In the first year, students begin with Histories and Aesthetics of Photography I, which introduces major photographic movements, theories, and critical frameworks. Studio Core I provides intensive hands-on practice focused on developing technical skills and personal artistic direction. Integrated Practices I encourages experimentation across media and approaches, while an open elective allows students to broaden their academic or creative experience.In the spring semester, Histories and Aesthetics of Photography II continues the critical and historical study of photography. Studio Core II deepens studio practice and project development. Students also take a professional elective to support specialized interests and a CAD studio elective to expand interdisciplinary skills within the College of Art and Design.In the second year, the focus shifts toward research, professional preparation, and thesis development. Research Core I and II support the conceptual and critical development of a major body of work. Professional Development for the Emerging Artist prepares students for careers in fine art, commercial photography, galleries, teaching, and related fields. The program culminates in a two-semester thesis sequence, where students produce and exhibit a final cohesive body of work.Overall, the program is designed to help students develop a strong individual voice, advanced technical and conceptual abilities, and professional readiness for careers in contemporary photography, media arts, and creative industries.
