COURSE CURRICULUM

The MFA in Metals and Jewelry Design at RIT is a structured two-year, studio-based graduate program that emphasizes advanced craftsmanship, conceptual development, and professional practice in contemporary metals and jewelry art. The curriculum is designed to help students refine their technical abilities while developing a strong personal artistic identity through intensive studio work and critical reflection.In the first year, students focus heavily on foundational graduate studio practice through Metals and Jewelry Design Graduate Studio 1, which runs across both semesters and forms the core of the program. This is supported by courses such as Technology in the Studio, which introduces modern tools and fabrication methods, and Ideation and Series, which develops conceptual thinking and design development strategies. Students also take Studio Art Research to strengthen research skills in art and design practice. Open electives and professional electives allow students to broaden their learning or specialize in related areas.The second year shifts toward professional development and thesis preparation. Students continue intensive studio work while taking Business Practices for Studio Artists, which prepares them for careers as independent artists or designers by covering topics such as exhibition practices, marketing, and professional management. Research and Thesis introduces the development of a focused body of work supported by critical inquiry, while Research Methods and Publication helps students document, analyze, and present their work in professional contexts.The program culminates in the Thesis course in the final semester, where students complete and exhibit a comprehensive body of work that represents their artistic vision, technical mastery, and research development. This final thesis exhibition serves as the primary credential for graduation and is often used as the foundation for professional practice or entry into teaching, gallery work, or independent studio careers.Overall, the curriculum blends studio practice, research, and professional preparation, enabling students to emerge as highly skilled metals and jewelry artists with both creative and entrepreneurial capabilities.
