COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Fine Arts in Industrial Design is a 60-credit graduate program that focuses on advanced design practice, research, and human-centered innovation. The curriculum is structured to develop students’ abilities in design thinking, prototyping, visualization, and critical analysis while preparing them for careers in product design, user experience design, innovation consulting, and related creative industries.The program is divided into two years of study, beginning with a strong foundation in design methods, visualization, and theory. In the first semester, students take courses in technology studio, design laboratory, function of form, 2D ideation and visualization, and industrial design history, theory, and culture. These courses build essential skills in design thinking, conceptual development, and understanding the cultural and historical context of industrial design.In the spring semester, students continue with advanced studio work in design laboratory II and form of function, along with integrated design visualization and design research and proposals. An open elective allows students to explore complementary areas that support their individual design interests.In the second year, the focus shifts toward advanced studio practice and thesis development. Students complete graduate industrial design studio I and II while beginning and completing their thesis work. The thesis is divided into two stages: research and planning in the fall, followed by implementation and evaluation in the spring. These courses emphasize independent research, iterative design development, and the creation of a final professional-level design project.Throughout the program, students also complete art history and open electives that broaden their academic and creative perspectives. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on studio practice, critical thinking, design research, and communication skills, supported by access to advanced fabrication tools and collaborative studio environments.Overall, the program prepares graduates to become skilled industrial designers capable of addressing complex design challenges through innovative, sustainable, and user-centered solutions.
