COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Furniture Design is a two-year, 60-credit graduate program focused on advanced furniture design, studio practice, and material-based research. The curriculum is structured to develop both conceptual thinking and technical mastery in furniture making, while encouraging students to refine their personal design philosophy and aesthetic direction.In the first year, students focus on foundational studio development through Furniture Design Graduate Studio 1, which runs across both semesters and forms the core of the program. This intensive studio experience is supported by courses such as Technology in the Studio, which builds technical and fabrication skills, and Ideation and Series, which strengthens conceptual development and iterative design thinking. Students also take Studio Art Research to develop critical inquiry and research-based approaches to design. Open and professional electives allow exploration of complementary disciplines and expand creative perspectives.In the second year, students continue advanced studio work while shifting toward professional development and thesis preparation. Business Practices for Studio Artists introduces career planning, exhibition strategies, and professional practice in the design field. Research Methods and Publication strengthens documentation and communication of design work. Students also enroll in Research and Thesis, where they develop their thesis concept and begin focused independent investigation.The program culminates in the MFA Thesis, a major capstone experience in which students produce a refined and cohesive body of furniture design work. This final phase demonstrates technical skill, conceptual depth, and personal design identity, often presented in a formal exhibition setting.Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers as professional furniture designers, studio artists, educators, and makers.
