COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology at Rochester Institute of Technology follows a structured, application-focused curriculum designed to build strong foundations in engineering science, materials, mechanics, and thermal systems while emphasizing hands-on laboratory and industry experience. In the first year, students begin with core science and mathematics courses such as general chemistry, calculus, and physics, along with introductory engineering topics like fundamentals of engineering, machine tools, manufacturing processes, and engineering communication. These early courses are designed to develop basic technical skills and introduce students to engineering tools and workshop practices. In the second year, the curriculum deepens with advanced mathematics, physics, statics, strength of materials, electrical circuits, and materials science, alongside labs and communication courses that strengthen both technical understanding and professional writing skills. Students also complete general education requirements in ethics, global perspectives, and communication to build well-rounded abilities. The third year focuses more heavily on engineering analysis and applied mechanics, including mechanical dynamics, thermal-fluid science, and advanced statistics. A major component of this year is the cooperative education (co-op) experience, where students work full-time in industry to gain real-world engineering experience. The fourth year introduces advanced topics such as machine design, measurement systems and controls, advanced mechanics, and thermal-fluid systems, along with a senior design project that integrates knowledge from previous courses. Students also take additional general education electives and open electives to broaden their academic experience. In the fifth year, students continue co-op work experience and complete specialized courses such as fluid mechanics and fluid power, a thermal-fluid systems project, technical electives, and additional general education immersion courses. Across the entire program, students complete a total of 128 credit hours, combining classroom learning, laboratory work, communication training, and extensive industry co-op experience. This curriculum ensures graduates are well-prepared for careers in manufacturing, robotics, automotive, aerospace, and energy industries, with strong practical and technical engineering skills.
