COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology is a structured, mathematics- and systems-focused program designed to prepare students to optimize complex processes involving people, materials, information, and technology. The 2025–2026 curriculum combines engineering science, data analysis, operations research, and real-world cooperative education experiences over five years.In the first year, students build a strong foundation in chemistry, calculus, physics, materials processing, and introductory industrial engineering concepts. Courses such as Fundamentals of Industrial Engineering and Materials Processing introduce students to engineering systems and manufacturing principles, while general education courses develop communication, ethics, and analytical thinking skills.The second year strengthens mathematical and engineering foundations with courses in multivariable calculus, probability and statistics, linear systems, engineering economy, mechanics, and computing for engineers. Students also prepare for professional experience through co-op preparation and begin learning design of experiments and statistical methods used in engineering decision-making.In the third year, students begin alternating academic study with cooperative education experiences. Core coursework includes operations research, materials science, systems and facilities planning, ergonomics and human factors, and engineering management. These subjects focus on optimizing systems, improving workplace efficiency, and understanding human interaction within engineering environments.The fourth year emphasizes advanced applications such as production planning, systems simulation, statistical quality control, and data analytics. Students also complete immersion courses and professional electives while continuing to build specialized expertise in industrial engineering topics.In the fifth year, students complete their multidisciplinary senior design project in two parts, along with advanced coursework in predictive modeling and additional electives.
