COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computer Engineering BS curriculum at RIT is a five-year program totaling 129 credit hours, designed to provide a strong foundation in both hardware and software systems along with extensive practical experience. In the first year, students begin with introductory computer engineering and programming courses, along with calculus, physics, and general education subjects such as writing, arts, and social perspectives. This stage builds core skills in programming, problem-solving, and mathematical reasoning.In the second year, the curriculum becomes more technical, covering topics such as digital system design, circuits, embedded programming, discrete mathematics, multivariable calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra. Students also take software engineering, which helps bridge the gap between hardware and software development, preparing them for complex system design.The third year focuses on advanced core subjects including computer organization, applied programming in C, circuits, and digital electronics. During this period, students also begin their required co-op experiences, gaining hands-on industry exposure through full-time work placements that extend into the summer and fourth year.In the fourth year, students return to academic coursework with advanced topics such as digital signal processing, computer architecture, interface electronics, and probability and statistics, along with immersion courses. The fifth year emphasizes professional and practical application through multidisciplinary senior design projects, where students work in teams to solve real-world engineering problems, along with courses in data communication networks and electives.Overall, the program integrates rigorous academics with extensive co-op experience and a capstone design sequence, preparing graduates for careers in areas such as embedded systems, hardware design, software development, and networking.
