COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering at RIT is a structured five-year program that combines engineering principles with biological and medical sciences to prepare students for careers in healthcare, medical devices, and biomedical research. In the first year, students build a foundation in calculus, chemistry, physics, programming, and introductory biomedical engineering concepts, along with general education courses in writing and the arts. The second year focuses on core engineering and life science topics such as biosystems analysis, biomaterials, biomechanics, fluid mechanics, and cell and molecular biology for engineers, supported by labs and advanced mathematics including differential equations and vector calculus.In the third year, students begin their first co-op experience and take advanced courses in medical device design, biomedical signal analysis, and quantitative physiology, along with probability and statistics and global perspective studies. This year emphasizes applying engineering principles to real biomedical problems while gaining industry experience through cooperative education. The fourth year continues with advanced systems physiology, numerical analysis of biosystems, engineering statistics, and signal analysis labs, along with electives and immersion courses that allow students to explore specialized interests.In the fifth year, students focus on advanced hands-on learning and professional preparation through senior lab work and a multidisciplinary senior design project, where they work in teams to design and develop biomedical engineering solutions. They also complete professional electives, fundamental engineering electives, general education immersion courses, and open electives to further specialize their knowledge. Across the entire program, students complete multiple co-op experiences that provide extensive real-world industry exposure.Overall, the Biomedical Engineering BS totals 129 credit hours and integrates engineering, biology, mathematics, and clinical applications. It prepares graduates for careers in medical device design, healthcare technology, pharmaceuticals, and biomedical research, as well as for graduate or professional studies in engineering or health-related fields.
