COURSE CURRICULUM
The Physics BS curriculum at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for 2025–2026 is a 124-credit, four-year program designed to provide a strong foundation in mathematics, theoretical physics, and experimental techniques, while preparing students for research, industry, or graduate study. In the first year, students build core knowledge in calculus and introductory physics. Courses include Calculus I and II, an introduction to special relativity, and University Physics I, along with general education in writing, arts, and sciences such as biology or chemistry with labs. This year establishes essential analytical and problem-solving skills. In the second year, the program becomes more mathematically and technically advanced. Students study multivariable calculus, differential equations, computational physics and programming, and University Physics II. They also take courses in modern physics, vibrations and waves, and electronic measurements, along with a seminar that introduces them to the physics profession. General education courses in ethics, global perspectives, and social sciences continue to broaden their academic experience. The third year focuses on advanced physics concepts and laboratory work. Students take Modern Physics II, classical mechanics, mathematical methods in physics, and specialized lab courses such as experiments in modern physics and advanced laboratory work. They also begin research preparation and complete immersion requirements, developing both theoretical understanding and experimental skills. In the fourth year, students engage in high-level specialization and independent work. They choose advanced topics such as quantum mechanics or thermal and statistical physics and complete a two-part capstone project involving research, analysis, and scientific communication. Program electives and open electives allow students to tailor their studies toward specific interests such as astrophysics, materials science, or applied physics.Overall, the curriculum combines rigorous mathematics, theoretical knowledge, experimental training, and research experience, preparing graduates for careers in scientific research, engineering, data science, and technology, as well as for advanced graduate studies in physics and related fields.
