COURSE CURRICULUM
The Neuroscience BS curriculum at RIT (2025–2026) is a four-year program designed to build a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, psychology, mathematics, computing, and neuroscience, followed by advanced specialization and research experience. In the first year, students focus on core science and general education requirements, including introductory biology with lab work covering organisms, ecosystems, molecules, and cells, along with general and analytical chemistry and associated laboratory courses. Students also take applied calculus, an introductory psychology course, principles of computing, and a writing seminar, helping them develop essential scientific, analytical, and communication skills. In the second year, the curriculum shifts toward more focused neuroscience and psychology content. Students take courses in cognitive neuroscience, cognitive psychology, biopsychology, behavioral research methods, statistics, and data science. Physics and general education electives in arts, global studies, and social perspectives help broaden their academic foundation while strengthening quantitative and analytical reasoning. The third year emphasizes advanced neuroscience training and laboratory experience. Students complete experimental lab methods in neuroscience and a two-part cognitive neuroscience seminar, while also studying organic chemistry and its lab component. At this stage, students begin selecting program electives and continue fulfilling general education immersion requirements, allowing them to explore specialized topics within neuroscience and related fields. In the fourth year, students complete a capstone sequence in neuroscience, which involves independent research and advanced study across two semesters. They also take multiple program electives and open electives, giving them flexibility to deepen expertise or explore interdisciplinary interests. The capstone experience is designed to integrate knowledge from previous years and apply it to real research problems.Overall, the program totals 121 credit hours and is structured to gradually move students from foundational science and general education to advanced neuroscience research and specialization. It prepares graduates for careers in healthcare, research, data science, artificial intelligence, and graduate study in neuroscience or related health and scientific fields.
