COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science in Motion Picture Science at Rochester Institute of Technology is a highly interdisciplinary program that combines film production, imaging science, mathematics, physics, and computer science to prepare students for careers in advanced film technology, visual effects, post-production, and digital media engineering. The curriculum is designed to help students understand both the creative and scientific foundations of motion picture production, including how images are captured, processed, analyzed, and displayed in modern cinema and digital media. In the first year, students begin with foundational coursework such as a freshman imaging project, production basics, introduction to imaging and video systems, calculus, physics, and basic sound recording. These courses introduce students to both the artistic and technical aspects of filmmaking while also building essential mathematical and scientific knowledge. The second year strengthens this foundation through advanced study in vision and psychophysics, mathematical methods for imaging, color science, probability and statistics for imaging, linear and Fourier methods, animation, and production processes, along with continued physics study and general education requirements. In the third year, students move into more specialized topics such as geometric optics, image processing, machine learning for image analysis, and digital production technologies. They also study image capture systems and gain deeper experience in production workflows while completing general education immersion and elective courses. This stage emphasizes the scientific principles behind imaging systems and how they are applied in professional film and media environments. The fourth year focuses on advanced applications and professional practice, including film projection and digital cinema, IT fundamentals for digital media, and a two-part senior project that integrates all areas of learning. Students also complete electives and general education immersion requirements. Across 127 credit hours, the program blends hands-on film production experience with advanced imaging science and computational methods. Graduates are prepared for careers in film studios, visual effects companies, entertainment technology firms, and media research organizations, where they contribute to the development of modern cinematic and imaging technologies.
